Custom Men’s Suits ~ Great Tips for the Groom & Groomsmen From Beckett & Robb
How To Make the Groom Look (Almost) as Good as the Bride
By Derek Bleazard of Beckette & Robb
Okay, we all know this is really the Bride’s day. We agree. Without taking anything away from her you can still up your game to make this a day you’ll both be proud to remember while looking at pictures. Incorporate these tips and you’ll add that extra level of elegance to the day your Bride has been planning since grade school.
- FIT. Perhaps nothing is quite so important. The suit should fit snugly in the shoulders, with a tapered waist and sleeves that show .5″ to 1.0″ of shirt cuff. The trousers should be pleat-less and cuff-less for a modern look, with a nice taper down the leg.
- Request a peaked lapel for the suit. It’s more formal than a notched lapel.
- Get a 2 button front suit. The long “V” shape this creates is elongating and complimentary. Button only the top button; the bottom-most button should never be buttoned, not at your wedding, and not when you wear the suit to your office or elsewhere later.
- Add a pocket square. For many wedding situations, a clean, white pocket square is the best choice. Your pocket square should never exactly match your tie. Never.
- Consider a tie clip. They are very “in” right now, but be sure it is understated and classy. Solid stainless steel or silver with no embellishments.
- Black is a great color for a suit to add formality to a wedding. Medium to light shades of gray are also excellent choices.
- Choose a color for your suit jacket lining to compliment wedding colors. A punch of color inside of a black or gray suit gives it some character, and when the jacket is buttoned, no one will notice it.
- Get a boutonniere that is no wider than the lapel of the suit jacket.
- Purchase a pair of great shoes. For a wedding they’re likely to be black. Plain toe, cap toe, or wingtip are great, but make sure they’re polished and sharp. Choose a pair that is modern and classic: long and narrow, lace-up, with a round toe.
- Unless your shoes are brand new, polish them before the wedding. Even some new shoes need a polish to make them look their best.
- Make the suit a three-piece: Adding the vest is an instant style upgrade and gives versatility to the suit. In warmer weather, the jacket can come off without losing formality and elegance.
- Furthermore, consider what you’re going to wear later into the festivities. Planning to dance and socialize? Shed the jacket and wear a vest to look formal and festive. Transfer your pocket square to the chest pocket of your vest.
- Exert some influence on the groomsmen and guests. Encourage everyone to dress up for your big day.
- Make sure you have a well-fitting shirt to accompany your suit.
At Beckett & Robb, we invite you to consider a custom wedding suit. You’ll look and feel your best, and unlike her wedding gown, you’ll be able to wear your suit for years to come.
