Weddings are a party, and one of the biggest attractors of parties is the entertainment. Wedding entertainment varies as much as a couple’s imagination. When you are looking for the perfect entertainment for your reception, don’t be afraid to search outside of the music box.
Music
DJs
DJs are one of the most popular wedding reception entertinament choices. You and your fiance get to select the music you love and, if you plan out your music with your DJ, the music will create lasting memories.
- Make sure you and your fiancé meet with the DJ you hire to go over the list of songs you would like to hear and a list of songs that are NOT to be played.
- If you know the timing of your wedding events, such as prelude, cake cutting, first dance and “last song,” let your DJ know.
Live Bands and strings
Live bands, stringed groups and music ensembles can add a touch of class and fun that a DJ cannot. They provide more than music for you and your guests, they also provide a show. If you choose a lively jazz band, or your favorite local rock band, you can expect a lively party. If you choose a string quartet or music ensemble, the music they play will tend to be more classical and subdued, compared to a rock band.
- Audition the band, ensemble or group. You want your music to be in perfect harmony with your vision for your wedding day.
- Audition the band’s singer; the music may be perfect, but you’ll want a singer you can really enjoy.
- Go over your play list; pick songs that are fun and ones you can dance to, and songs that are slow and easy to waltz to.
MP3 players and computers
This affordable option for music may leave your guests wanting more…more entertainment. Don’t view this as a bad thing. Think of the MP3 player as your way to afford more entertainment; use your imagination with that saved money. (Don’t worry, there will be ideas below!)
Karaoke
You may have never even considered karaoke as possible wedding reception entertainment, or you put that thought aside as too silly. Well, think again.
Karaoke is very popular. Why? Because it is fun; fun to sing, fun to dance to, fun to watch! Karaoke machines can be rented and you can choose the songs your guests can select from. Never heard Sir Mix-a-Lot at a wedding before? Maybe, but have you heard him like this?
- If you’re afraid karaoke can’t carry your wedding entertainment alone, combine it with your DJ.
- Pick songs you love, but pick songs that people know; the more songs your guests know, the more willing they will be to get up and sing.
More than music?
There are many more choices for entertainment than you’d think. Music is only one form of entertainment for your reception.
Show your wedding video
If you have your wedding in the morning, your videographer should be able to provide you with a first-edit of the event. You can add music and have this play while you meet and greet your guests as they enter your reception. This offers a chance for you to include everyone in the wedding who wasn’t invited and can be a very beautiful addition to your reception entertainment.
Music alternatives
Here are a few entertainment ideas that other couples have used:
- Professional dancers: you can sit back and enjoy their skill or you can have them teach a dance lesson. For a wedding with a Latin theme, hire Latin dancers (country theme, country dancers etc). Latin dances are romantic, fun and very exciting!
- Have a carnival: hire face painters and someone to make balloon animals. Have prizes for guessing games; there are many different ways to have fun at a carnival.
- Carnival-Cirque du Soleil style: this is for the brave and daring! Hire acrobats, jugglers and stilt walkers. This exotic entertainment will leave your guests with a very lasting impression.
- Have a masque ball: the theme of your wedding can inspire ideas for your entertainment. Have a masquerade; you can hand out masques at the door or ask guests to come prepared.
- Have an opera: well, maybe not a whole opera. An opera singer, or even a few, can really set your reception apart! Opera’s call for fancy dress, and since you and your guests are already dressed up… all you need is the singer.
- Entertainment; Italian style: you’ve seen those small music groups at Italian restaurants; a fiddle or violin, a viola, maybe a bass and a singer. They can float from table to table and, for your sit down dinner, they could really add that touch of Old World charm you’re looking for.
- Elvis at the reception: love old movies or celebrities? Have your own celebrity wedding with celebrity impersonators. Elvis is popular, but you can find any star.
These are just a few ideas, but there are endless possibilities. Regardless of what you decide to go with, do a little research; check your venue to see what they will and will not allow.
Overall, enjoy your day, and don’t be afraid to find entertainment that may be a little less ordinary.
