Finding Your Style

The French poet Jean Cocteau said, “Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” Weddings, at times, seem the most complicated of things, and it’s important to take some time to put that important individual stamp on this elaborate celebration.
The response I encounter most when talking to a couple about style is, “I don’t really know.” While style as a concept can be somewhat ambiguous, and seem complicated, let me offer three easy steps to making your style statement simple.
1 – Personality. Stop for a moment and figure out your personality. Now don’t think you need to go and take some personality color test, unless you have that kind of time and inclination. All you need to do is find words and/or phrases that make up your personality. Are you a Drama Queen? A party animal? Aggressive? Shy? There are millions to choose from. Keep it simple, though, just two or three aspects; you don’t want this to get complicated.

2 – Feeling. This part takes a little stepping outside the box. When you have your personality nailed down, take each one, and decide what feelings these personality traits emit. For example, if you are aggressive, one feeling could be tension. Make a list of any feelings that could go along with each trait, and you’re almost home.

3 – Look. Every image, scent, taste, and sound produces an emotional response. The great artists know how to capture feelings and transfer those sensations to whoever gets close enough to experience their work. You can use the same idea to finalize your style. When you’re looking for decorations, locations, colors, clothing, etc., find those things that will emit your unique feelings. If you do it right, your wedding will be a constant expression of yourself to all those who participate and attend.

Style is something that we often can take lightly. But with just a little introspection and thought, anyone can find their style. So don’t forget to apply style to your wedding plans, and when people participate with you, they will be sharing little pieces of you throughout the day. And, of course, finding your style can really help you to have that next level of photography. When you truly know your style, your photographer will truly be able to capture you, and your style will endure forever.
