This sounds like an easy feat, doesn’t it? Being the perfect wedding guest, however, is more than buying the best gift, or showing up and leading the YMCA song dance. There are rules of etiquette that apply to guests, just as there are rules for the bride and groom.
The first, and most important rule: Don’t be late, especially to a ceremony. You wouldn’t want to interrupt the processional down the aisle. And remember, for temple weddings, they will close the door.
Next, Do not take pictures at the ceremony. That is why they hired a professional photographer. Their photographer will be doing his or her utmost to respect the sanctity of the ceremony, and so should you.
Even if you are unable to attend, it is still customary to send a gift. You have up to a year after the marriage to send a gift, which means that you don’t even need to bring one to the wedding if you do attend.
This next one is also important: RSVP promptly. The bride and groom are planning a million things at once, so the sooner they have a headcount, the better. Also, if you need to cancel later, cancel ASAP.
Along with your RSVP, you should also check the invitation. If it says you plus a guest, you may bring ONE guest. However, if not, Do not bring unexpected guests. The food at most weddings is priced based per person, and it isn’t cheap. (This includes family, even children.) Also, if the invitation says “no children,” that should also be observed.
Most of us have seen the Wedding Singer and the embarrassingly drunk wedding guest who wants to toast the newlyweds. Don’t let that be you. Drink in moderation; there is nothing more embarrassing than discovering the day after that you were the drunk toasting every one’s health and revealing secrets indiscriminately about the bride or groom.
Lastly, wish the happy couple well. Let them know that you enjoyed yourself and that you are so pleased to have been invited.
