Now that you have the expensive and difficult registry items out of the way, it’s time to talk about the fun stuff…Everything else.
A quick note on what is appropriate
I can’t tell you how many times couple’s have registered for things that I would consider inappropriate. The number one thing your wedding registry rep will warn against is registering for holiday and seasonal items. They really do have a reason for this. They don’t always carry seasonal items, so, if you absolutely LOVE the dishes with Frosty the Snowman, buy it, but don’t register for it.
When you are considering which fun things to register for, consider your guests. If your wedding guest list includes older couples over 50, registering for an Xbox or PS3 will only get your mother or father a few phone calls about your impertinence. And you’ll most likely end up with a lot of bath towels with old fashioned patterns. Similarly, if your guest list is filled with college palls and childhood friends, registering for crystal vases and silver frames may inspire a lot of questions and more teasing than you probably care for.
If your list includes a fair mix of both, include a fair mix of both types of fun items. Register for several items in low, middle and high price points.
Register for everything else
Bedroom and bath
They recommend 3 each, but you can also use that as a starting point:
- Pillowcases (pairs)
- Flat sheets
- Fitted Sheets
- Sheet sets
And at least two of each:
- Comforters
- Blankets
- Pillows
When it comes to registering for towels, you’ve heard the stories: you’ll receive dozens of towels, even if you don’t register for any. Here’s a tip: register for plenty in colors and patterns that you like. The worst thing that should happen here is that you get a lot of towels that you like. Register for at least 6 of each:
- Bath/body sheets (35″ x 60″ up to 35″ x 70″)
- Bath towels (27″ x 52″ up to 30″ x 58″)
- Hand Towels (16″ x 30″)
- Washcloths (13″ x 13″)
And at least 2 bath rugs. Here you can also add on matching bath accessories.
The kitchen
If you love to cook, this will be a fun area:
- Cookware set: this includes all of the pans you’re likely to need
- Open stock cookware: these you can pick and choose from; include an omelette or skillet pan (8, 10, 12 inch), sauce pans (1, 2, 3, 4 quart), sauté pans.
- Grill or griddle
At least 2 each:
- Cookie sheets
- Muffin pans
- Cake pans
- Baking pans
And fun for the groom to choose:
- Knife set: you can get a knife set in a block or without the block and register for the block separately
- Open stock knives: include at least a paring knife, chef’s knife, bread knife and sharpening tool.
Register for appliances:
- Blender (such an old-fashioned gift that will make you happy anyway)
- Microwave
- Toaster
These are just the basics, but if you want to get some great gifts, consider registering for these as well:
- Food processor
- Stand mixer (these are expensive so register for one! You may be surprised and get two!)
- Waffle maker
- Rice cooker
- Juicer
- Ice cream maker
- Iron (really, you don’t want to forget one of these)
- And an ironing board
For the table, at least register for tablecloths (2 or more) that match the seasons or complement your dinnerware.
Home décor and fun and games
You can also register for frames, vases and other crystal gifts. You could register for movies, games and game consoles, even camping equipment, if the store carries them, but remember your guests. If you only register for fun things and not necessities, those older guests may decide to buy items that aren’t on your registry and probably things you don’t want.
Have fun registering for gifts. These are basic tips designed to keep you from going scan crazy or gun shy, but you can pick and choose what is best for you. And don’t be afraid to listen to the sales clerk who assists you. Here is a warning about that: if they aren’t employed in the wedding section, they could be no help at all; don’t be afraid to ask them.
