“Slimming down” before the wedding: making room for him

Ah ha! You’re thinking this is about weight loss! Unfortunately, I am not qualified to give that advice, but when it comes to slimming down your material possessions, I can help you there.
Make room
Brides, there is no use denying, you have a lot of stuff, probably a lot more than your groom owns. Unless you are established adults moving into a large enough home immediately after the wedding, you’re not going to have enough room to combine apartments.
Here are a few tips on clearing clutter to help you slim down before your wedding:
- Make a garage/yard sale pile. This is the first thing to do; do it now!
- “If in doubt, throw it out.” Yes, this usually applies to leftovers in the refrigerator, but it’s true here, too. If you haven’t used it in a year, you probably haven’t missed it, nor will you miss it during the next year. If you aren’t sure if you’ll use it, get ride of it anyway.
- Set “good stuff” aside; you may be planning to refinish a table or nightstand, but be honest, are you really going to? Take this stuff that you had plans for but never got around to and add it to your sale pile.
- Go through your clothes: if you haven’t worn it in the last 9 months (which is plenty of time to have worn seasonal clothing and decided if they fit), add the clothes to the sale pile if they are too outdated or don’t fit. Sorry brides, this includes shoes, too.
As you go through your stuff, deciding what can go and what you need, remember that you registered for gifts… you can part with your broken blender and scratched cake pans you’ve had since you went off to college.
After your yard sale, you should cheer up immensely, since you just made money (which can be used for the wedding). Here is a tip that will keep you ready to combine apartments: after the yard sale, DO NOT take anything back inside again; load it in your car and donate it to charity.
